YA Map of the United States

The YA Reading site Epic Reads posted a cool map a couple weeks ago that lists a popular YA book for every single state in the United States.  Check out the map and article here.  Illinois' representative on the map is Divergent, by Veronica Roth which takes place in Chicago.

Entertainment Weekly posted an exclusive preview of the first three chapters to Ally Condie's Reached, the final book in the Matched trilogy.  Reached wraps up the story of Cassia, Ky and Xander who live in the future dystopian world known simply as the Society.

2012 Teens' Top Ten Winners

This year's Teen's Top Ten Winners were announced this week.  This is a teen choice list, where teen's nominate their favorite books of the past year and vote for them online.  Below is the top ten, but check out the Teens' Top Ten website for other nominated titles.

1. Divergent by Veronica Roth
Abnegation (selflessness), Erudite (intelligence), Candor (honesty), Amity (peace), or Dauntless (bravery): where would you fit? Beatrice lives in a society where she must choose either to remain with her family’s faction or set off towards independence and her beliefs. And what happens when the unity between these factions begins to fall apart?


2. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Oswego Cemetery Walk

Looking for a spooky outing this week to get ready for Halloween? Come to the Oswego Cemetery Walk on South Main Street this Thursday, October 18 from 7-9 p.m. Groups will be escorted to a series of grave sites throughout the cemetery to visit the ghosts who live there and hear the stories of their past.

Groups are led by kerosene lanterns, so if you plan on attending, wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight!

Beautiful Creatures Movie Trailer

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl came out a few years ago and was immediately a bestseller, probably due to it's star crossed main characters, Ethan and Lena, and the atmosphere that the authors create of a haunting old Southern town.  The trailer for the movie was just released, check it out below:


The book series that Beautiful Creatures began also happens to be finishing off this Fall, with the final book in the 4 part series, Beautiful Redemption, coming out in October.

Maximum Ride is Over, What Should You Read Next?

The final book in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson came out this past month so some of you might be wondering what you should read next.  Maximum Ride books are known for their mix of crazy science fiction, adventure and non-stop suspense.  If you like the sound of that, here's a list of titles to get you started:

Preview 'Shiver' Trilogy author Maggie Stiefvater's new book 'The Raven Boys'!

Maggie Stiefvater, the author of the bestselling Shiver trilogy has a new book coming out next week The Raven Boys.  The book follows Blue Sargent, a girl born into a family of psychics who has been told who whole life that if she ever kisses her true love, he will die.  Intrigued?  If the answer is yes, check out the free preview of the first chapter which the author is offering at her website.

Next Teen Book Discussion Book, The Night Circus!


The next title for the Teen Book Discussion Group is The Night Circus, which is this year's Fox Valley Reads title.  What is Fox Valley Reads, you may be asking?  It's a partnership among libraries in the Fox Valley area who get together every year to promote one fantastic book all over the Fox Valley.  This year they picked a fun fantasy tale of a circus that only comes at night.  The libraries are putting together many great programs, including a visit from the author of The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern, who will be stopping by to talk to book fans at Oswego High School on October 11th.  If you're interested in attending that free program, you can register at our Calendar of Events.

What Are the Top 100 Teen Novels of All Time?

Making 'Best of' lists is tricky, it seems like someone's favorite will always fall through the cracks.  However, NPR recently gave it a try by coming out with a list of the top 100 teen books of all time.  The Harry Potter series tops the list, which also includes many recent teen favorites like The Hunger Games and Veronica Roth's Divergent.

The Rise of Nine First 5 Chapters Sneak Peek

Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive look at the first 5 Chapters of The Rise of Nine before it's release on August 21st.  The Rise of Nine is the the third in an action packed bestselling trilogy that started with I Am Number Four and tells the story of John, a teenage alien on the run for his life.  The first book also was adapted to a feature film starring Glee's Dianna Argron, although no word yet if the rest of the series will be.
